indicated after an examination of the body. The gruesome find was made early
today by Howard Ashton, Pt. Marion bottling works manager, with whom the aged
glass-worker had been employed part time.

Tragedy stalked a party of three boys, happy at play at the Reidmore home of State Fish Commissioner Kenneth A. Reid, near South Connellsville, Sunday afternoon at about 2:15 o’clock and two of them perished by drowning, one going to his death as he made a valiant effort to save his playmate from the watery grave.
The dead:
Harmon Kephart Augustine, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Clarence Augustine, and a grandson of former State Treasurer and Mrs. Harmon M. Kephart of 306 South Pittsburg street.
James Daniels, 13, son of Mrs. Leona Daniels and a grandson of the Mrs. J. Emmett Collins of 301 Grandview avenue. Reid “Sonny” Kephart, 11, son of Mrs. Gertrude Kephart, widow of John Kephart of Philadelphia, who has been staying at the Reid home, had a narrow escape from death when he first went to the rescue of his cousin, Harmon, after the latter had dived into 10 feet of water off the bridge at one end of the lake.
The Kephart boy, however, was able to free himself from the grasp of Harmon and sought to obtain an inflated inner tube with which he had played on other occasions to take to his kin who was floundering in the water, apparently seized with cramps. It was another whim of fate that traded the life of the Kephart boy for that of Jimmy Daniels, as the latter was on the bank when Harmon cried for help. He saw “Sonny” make his rescue effort and then go for the inner tube. Without hesitation, he dashed into the water and went to the aid of the Augustine boy. As he did the latter, grasping for something to help him, took hold of Jimmy and the two went beneath the surface to their graves.
Harmon Augustine, who had been spending the summer vacations with his father at Addison, had come to Connellsville on Saturday so he could attend mass at Immaculate Conception Church as usual on Sunday morning. He had received his communion at that time. He left the Kephart home shortly after noon and started for Reidmore to spend the afternoon with his companions—his cousin “Sonny” Kephart, who was staying with his mother at the Reid home, and James Daniels of Grandview avenue. The Augustine boy was making his first trip to play with his two companions of former years at Reidmore, Jimmy and Sonny, however, had spent practically all of their vacation thus far together at the Reid home. Jimmy had planned to enter a hospital this week to have his tonsils removed.
The trio had not been in the water when they started for the lake. As youngsters usually do, they started for the lake with the jovial laughter of “last one in is a so and so” on their lips and Harmon was the first on the bridge. He immediately leaped in. It was the short span of two minutes that followed which cost the lives of the two popular lads. In the vicinity were the mother and uncle of “Sonny” who rushed to the scene when they heard the latter’s cries but they were unable to find the victims.
The three decided to go swimming, Harmon was the first to get to the water as they headed for the bridge at one end of the lake. He jumped in at a point where it is about 10 feet deep. Undoubtedly seized with cramps as he plunged into the cold water, the youth began floundering about and cried for help. “Sonny” Kephart, trailing him on the dash to the lake, leaped to the rescue of his cousin. As he attempted to aid Harmon, “Sonny” felt the taller and older boy, in desperation, grab him and pull him under the water. He managed somehow to break away as Harmon momentarily relaxed his death grip and then he swam in the direction of an inflated inner tube with which he had played on previous occasions. “Jimmy” Daniels, who was on the bank at the time, leaped into the water to go to Harmon’s rescue despite the fact he could not swim expertly. As the Kephart boy was after the tube and his back was turned, he failed to notice what developed when the Daniels youngster plunged into the water, but authorities are inclined to believe that when the latter came within reach of Augustine he was grabbed by the frantic swimmer and that both went under the water. “Sonny” shouted for help. His mother, who was sitting in the distance, and an uncle J. Donald Reid, raced to the scene. They went into the water in a futile effort to find the bodies. Even search from a boat was fruitless. Meanwhile some person who had been attracted to the scene put in a call for the Connellsville Fire Department and Fire Chief William E. DeBolf has an inhalator rushed there. Later grappling hooks were dispatched and it was through the use of these that the bodies were recovered from the watery graves about 45 minutes after the drownings.
Both the city and the South Connellsville fire departments were on the scene. Members used a pulmotor in an effort to revive the boys but to no avail. The body of Augustine was removed to the funeral parlors of Deputy Coroner Milton V. Munk and that of Daniels to the undertaking establishment to Charles C. Mitchell where they were prepared for burial.
Harmon Kephart Augustine, the only child of J. Clarence Augustine of Addition and Sarah Kephart Augustine of New York, was born in Merlon, Philadelphia, on March 5, 1922, and had spent the greater part of his life with his maternal grandparents, former State Treasurer and Mrs. Harmon M. Kephart of the Masonic building, South Pittsburgh street. While the Kepharts resided in Philadelphia, the youngster attended the Waldren Academy there. Since coming to Connellsville, however, he had been attending classes at the Immaculate Conception School and next month would have been enrolled as a member of the junior class of the High School. The Augustine boy is a grand-nephew of State Supreme Court Justice John W. Kephart of Ebensburg, the latter being a brother of former State Treasurer H. M. Kephart of the Masonic Building. The youth’s uncle, John W. Kephart, father of “Sonny” Kephart, had been killed in an automobile accident on Christmas Day five years ago as he was returning to Connellsville from Addison.
Jimmy Daniels was the great-grandson of Clark Collins, Connellsville’s last Civil War veteran who died several months ago. His grandfather, the former postmaster, passed away two years ago and it was about two months after that that a brother of the young hero of the drowning tragedy passed away. James Daniels, the son of Mrs. Leona Daniels and a grandson of Mrs. J. Emmett Collins of 301 Grandview avenue, widow of a former postmaster here, is survived by his mother, his maternal grandmother and a sister, Jane, of Pittsburgh. A student in the Cameron Building, he had been very active in the two junior organizations, the popular Junior Drum and Bugle Corps and the recently formed Connellsville School Band. He was an active member of Troop No. 5, Boy Scouts, of the First Methodist Episcopal Church.
The body of the Augustine boy was to be removed this afternoon to the home of an aunt, Mrs. John Kephart, at 112 West Peach street, where it will remain until the time of the funeral. Services will be held Wednesday morning with the cortege meeting at the home at 9:30 o’clock followed by requiem high mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10 o’clock. Rev. Henry A. Geibel, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
The Daniels funeral service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Collins home with Rev. Dr. W. H. Hetrick, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hill Grove Cemetery.

On the 7th inst., on the “Lutheran Globe,” at the residence of his son, Joseph M., in German township, Mr. DANIEL G. W. DAVID, late of Wharton township, in the 94th year of his age. The subject of this notice was a son of the Rev. Enoch David, of sacred memory, and was born in Philadelphia, February 10, 1763. He had been a member of the “seventh Day Baptist Society” upwards of seventy years, and to his death, with a memory and mind unusually clear and strong, he was most zealous in defending the peculiarities of their faith. In the last few days of his life, when the hand of age and disease pressed heavily upon him, the rich and precious promises of God's word afforded him a great deal of comfort. He dwelt with cheering hopes upon the 23d Psalm; and the brightening prospects of a happy home beyond the sky, softened his dying bed, until a messenger from the Friend of Sinners came and called him to that rest which remaineth for the people of God, “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.”

Charles Davidson, 70 years old, one of Connellsville leading citizens and well known in industrial affairs, especially in the manufacture of coke, died Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock at his home, 340 North Pittsburg street. Mr. Davidson’s death was not unexpected. He had been ill for the past five weeks and for the past week his condition had been critical.
Mr. Davidson was born in Connellsville, October 3, 1850, a son of the late Daniel R. and Margaret Clark Johnston Davidson, and with the exception of a few years, spent at Beaver, where his parents had removed when he was a boy, he spent virtually all his life in Connellsville. Mr. Davidson received his early education in the public schools and later attended Hiram college, Hiram, O., and Bethany college, Bethany, W. Va., where he completed his education.
Following his graduation from the latter college he returned to Connellsville and engaged with the engineers who surveyed and constructed the Southwest branch of the Pennsylvania railroad which connected Uniontown and Connellsville with the main line at Greensburg. In this capacity, Mr. Davidson served under Samuel Rea, engineer in charge, who in now president of the Pennsylvania system. During this association a warm friendship developed between Mr. Rea and Mr. Davidson which had been preserved throughout the intervening years. Whenever opportunity has offered, Mr. Rea had made inquiry concerning Mr. Davidson and to the latter’s friends took delight in relating incidents of their mutual experience in building the Southwest railroad during the winter of 1878-79, remembered by Mr. Rea as one of the coldest winters in his association with railroading.
At the time of building the railroad, Mr. Davidson’s father was a large stockholder of that company. Later Mr. Davidson became superintendent of the coke plant of the Davidson & Dravo company at Davidson and served in that capacity until about 1886. Some years after the plant had passed into the hands of the H. C. Frick Coke company. Upon his retirement as superintendent, Mr. Davidson was presented with a gold watch by the employees.
Mr. Davidson was one of the original and largest stockholders of The Electric company, the predecessor of the West Penn Power company which was organized in 1889. The company was the first formed for electric lighting purposes in Fayette county and the second in Western Pennsylvania, the first having been at Greensburg. …… Norton and John H. Gans were the organizers of the local company. Mr. Davidson became a director.
In the death of Mr. Davidson, Connellsville has lost one of its most substantial and progressive citizens. He was always interested in the city’s welfare and was a staunch supporter of any announcement made toward its growth and development. For more than a half century, he was identified with almost every big movement in Connellsville. He was an organizer of the Second National Bank and served continuously as a director of that institution since its organization and was re-elected last January to serve another term. He was also a founder of the Fayette Lumber company, a stockholder, and director for many years in the old Connellsville Machine & Car Company and a trustee of the Cottage State hospital. Through Mr. Davidson, the Sligo Iron & Steel company was established in Connellsville and he, a few years ago at a large financial sacrifice, saved the …… for Connellsville. At the time of his heath, Mr. Davidson was engaged in coal operations under the …… of the Connellsville Davidson Coal & Coke Company, with operations in Point Marion of which W. C. Reynolds, who died recently, was general manager.
In May, 1884, he was married to Miss Fannie Johns of Deer Park, Ill. She and two children, Edith, wife of Harry L. Mitchell, vice- president of the West Penn Traction company, Pittsburg and William J. Davidson, Point Marion, survive. Two brothers, George Davidson of Beaver Falls and Lewis Davidson of Bermuda and four grandchildren, Charles Davidson Mitchell, Caroline and Margaret Mitchell and Virginia Davidson also survive.
The funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at … o’clock at the family residence with Rev. …… pastor of the First Presbyterian church officiating. Interment will be made in Hill Grove cemetery.

Having been son of one of the founders of the coking industry, the death of Charles Davidson serves to remind us how rapidly we are receding, in point of time, from the days when Connellsville first began to receive recognition as an industrial center which has since spread its fame world-wide. Intimately associated with a plant that has always enjoyed the distinction of being one of the largest of the early beehive coke producers in the world. Mr. Davidson’s part in the development and growth of the industry was of more than …….. importance while his later interest and faith in his native town were given such frequent proof and sustained form that his service in these respects will be inseparably connected with the history of Connellsville.
Firm in his faith in Connellsville and accorded a leadership he justly merited, Mr. Davidson took an active interest in and was identified with those enterprises and undertakings of large usefulness which have contributed to materially to the growth and expansion of Connellsville but, in some instances, at a very large sacrifice to himself.
His intense loyalty to his friends and the place of his birth, therefore is a lesson in which there should be ……ch of inspiration and encouragement to every citizen who, as did Mr. Davidson, believe that Connellsville has within it and among its people the teachings and means whereby to achieve larger things. To such an achievement, Mr. Davidson in a large sense gave his talents, means and services, hence we and those who come after us will be debtors to his useful life among us.

Chilnissae Torrance Chalfant DAVIDSON (1850-1877)
"Chints", wife of John H. Davidson, M.D., was born in Greenfield, Uppermiddletown, Pa., July 2, 1850, and died in peace in her Perryopolis home, June 27, 1877. In the order of providence it fell to the lot of the deceased to be born and raised-up under precious religious influences, which culminated in her early conversion and identification with the M. E. Church, at the age of 12 years, during a meeting in Upper Middletown held by brothers W. K. Marshall and T. H. Wilhenson. She gave her heart to God, her religious life was not of the crushing type but rather calm and even. About five years ago she was married to her bereaved husband, and truly theirs was a union, for life's cares and sympathies and joys were peculiarly mutual. Her last illness was short and her dying expressions gave ample assurances that death held no sting, as her natural vision grew dim and dimmer, her spiritual vision grew stronger and stronger and she was able to look through the gates into the city of God, and behold among the redeemed her father who had preceded her in death. Her pilgrim feet were "tired" she said, but when she reached her journeys end and is now enjoying the rest that remaineth for people of God. Revs. Mansell, Wilkinson and Baird assisted the pastor in the funeral services.
Mrs. C. Davidson, wife of Dr. John Davidson, in the 27 year of her life. The funeral services took place on the 29th, the remains were followed to the cemetery by the largest concourse of relatives and friends we have ever seen here. The deceased was only confined to her room but a short time before her death. She died full of hope of a bright future, beloved and respected by all who knew her.

Work was received yesterday by Charles Davidson of North Pittsburg street of the death of his brother, Frederick Davidson of Pittsburg, who was drowned while bathing in the surf at Atlantic City during the afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Davidson had been spending a vacation at Atlantic City. They were taking a final plunge preparatory to leaving for home. Mr. Davidson got beyond his depth and spectators on a nearby pier heard him cry for help and then disappear beneath the waves. They called for assistance. There being no lifeguards on duty at this time of the year. Melvin Bothwell and George Goodfello, young residents of the resort, launched a canoe and after a desperate fight with the waves reached the spot where Mr. Davidson had sunk. They dove into the water and between them, brought up the body. Mrs. Davidson participated in the work of rescue but collapsed when she found that the pulse could not be revived by the artificial respiration.
Mr. and Mrs. Davidson resided at 367 South Negley avenue, Pittsburg. Deceased was 47 years old, having been born in Connellsville, October 29, 1869, the son of Colonel Daniel R. Davidson. Davidson at 11:45 this morning, the community loses one of her foremost citizens, and the medical profession one of its most prominent practitioners. He had not been active in practice during the last four years, owing to a break down coming from his continued over exposure in the many years of work. Deceased was 67 years old, a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, class of 1872, and had been a resident and physician in this town since that time. He was vice president of one of the directors of the First National bank of this town, and held extensive interests in Fayette and West Virginia coal lands. Obituary
Again has the Archer entered the Presbyterian church of Dunlap's Creek and aimed
his fatal dart at one of our most lovely, members. Mrs. Margaret C. Davidson,
consort of Mr. James B. Davidson, and daughter of Mr. Yates Sr. and Annie Conwell.
On the 17th of November, and in the 32d year of her age, just in the prime of
life, surrounded by all the attractions of wealth and friendship, of filial and
congenial endearment was called to meet in mortal conflict with the king of terrors.
Premonitions of his approach appeared in early summer. Her mental conflict
in parting with so much that was endearing in her relation to earth, especially
three interesting children, one a lovely babe, was severe and protracted. But
as the hour of departure drew on grace triumphed over natural affection, and
she became sweetly resigned to the Master's will.
She assured her pastor that her visions of faith and hope were unclouded, and
that she was "ready to depart and be with Christ," in whom she firmly
trusted that he would do all things well for her and for the beloved ones whom
she should leave behind to buffet the storms of life. She called her family and
friends, one by one and gave her dying counsels. And such counsels! ----Who
that heard will ever forget? That voice of love and Christian solicitude for
their spiritual welfare ----how affectingly it lingers on the ear and penetrates
the heart! It seems as though dead, she yet speaks. "Her sun went down
while it was yet day," to rise, we trust, where clouds and setting will
be no more.
A beautiful incident occurred a short time before her spirit left the clay tabernacle.
Mr. Davidson's residence is on a commanding eminence overlooking the Monongahela
river and surrounding country. The river was in freshet, and the pall of darkness
was upon the earth. Raftsmen were floating their timber from the woodlands of
Western Virginia in large rafts to the market. ----Each one carried a light.
As one of these came floating down the swollen stream, the men aboard were singing
the 642d hymn of the General Assembly's collection: And must this body die,:
&c.
These notes, mellowed by their passage over the water in the silent hour of night,
fell on the ear of the devoted mother as she watched with her daughter, now just
on the verge of eternity, with a saddening effect, almost beyond endurance. ----
Fearing last the effect might be similar on the feeling of Mrs. D. she made no
remark until the music ceased to be audible in the chamber. She thought Mrs.
D. was sleeping ----when suddenly she said to her weeping mother, "O, was
not that delightful!" "What, my daughter?" "That beautiful
music and lovely hymn they sung!" It was the third stanza they sang when
just opposite her chamber window, through which the sounds entered quite audible
and which Mrs. D. Instantly repeated as follows"
"Arrayed in glorious grace,
Shall these vile bodies shine,
And every shape and every face
Look heavenly and divine!:
This was a favorite hymn, which she had committed to memory in youth. Carolled
by the lips of passing strangers, it now came floating on the silent air to cheer
her spirit in the dark, dark night of death, by bringing fresh to the eye of
faith the glorious scenes of the resurrection morn, when "this corruptible
shall have put on incorruption., and this mortal shall have put on immortality,
and death shall be swallowed up in victory." S.W.

Richard Randolph DAVIDSON ( -2012)
UNIONTOWN
Richard "Dick" Randolph Davidson
Richard "Dick" Randolph Davidson, 74, passed away quietly in his home Friday, July 6, 2012 with his loving family at his side one day before his 54th wedding anniversary. Dick was several years retired as a self-employed general contractor. He had a natural innate talent, a gift with which few of us possess. He had the ability to figure, solve, fix and create just about anything to which he set his mind. A man who expressed himself with tough but well intentioned love he always placed his concerns for the welfare of his family and friends first. It is this attribute to which those of us close to him will feel the deepest loss and sorrow. He is preceded in death by his father, Warren Davidson; mother, Virginia Gardner Holpit; stepfather, John Holpit; Sisters: Sondra Skocik and Penny Holpit; Son, Richard R. Davidson Jr.; grandson, Ben Schiffbauer and father-in-law, Charles Almes. Dick is survived by his wife, Suzanne Student Davidson; son, Timothy Alan Davidson and wife Jennifer, daughter, Michelle Rae Schiffbauer and husband Daniel; sister, Bobby Salitrik and husband Dan; grandsons: Daniel Edward Schiffbauer, Dean Richard Schiffbauer and Zayne Alan Davidson; granddaughters: Lauren Ariel Schiffbauer and Kaitlyn Marie Davidson; Mother-in-law, Agnes Almes; brother-in-law, Charles "Chuck" Almes; sisters-in-law: Mary Ann Biller and husband Francis, Anna Marie Newhouse and Judy Unice and husband Larry and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at KEZMARSKY FUNERAL HOME, 71 Pennsylvania Avenue, Uniontown, Pa., Monday, July 9, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday morning until 10 a.m. the Hour of Service. Interment follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery.
The first information of the explosion came from George Lacy, John
Smith, Samuel Meese and James G. Bennett, brother of one of the men
killed. They were at work in the mine also, and as soon after the
concussion of the explosion as possible they worked their way into
the effected district and found the bodies of Bennett and Hager.
From appearances it was believed that the drivers had gone into the
entry and ignited an accumulation of gas. Open lights were used.
Both bodies were burned somewhat, and also showed the effects of the
concussion. Later the bodies of the other miners were discovered,
in their rooms, where they had succumbed to the fatal lethargy that
overtakes the senses when the oxygen has been burned out of mine
air. As usual the bodies showed that the miners had not made any
struggles. The explosion, as judged from the indications left on
the side walls and roof of the mine, was strongest at the face of
the heading, leaving the impression that the gas had been liberated
at the face of the heading and worked its way out the entry.
The party named as rescuers were working in an entry not more than
50 feet removed from the heading in which the explosion occurred,
but they were uninjured, the air current leaving them pure air.
Another group of miners, a little nearer the deadly explosion, heard
the force of the gas as it ignited, and immediately started out.
They were met by the after-damp and some wished to stop, but an
experienced miner named John Ralston urged the men not to stop and
finally the party worked its way out to safety. A large force of
men volunteered to go into the mines immediately following the
announcement that there had been an explosion, and by 11 o’clock A.
M. all the bodies had been brought out of the mine. The scenes
about the opening were heartrending. A great crowd gathered and
many were the anxious faces that crowded about mourning about the
loved ones who were known to be in the mine at the time of the
explosion, and who were awaited, dead or alive, non knew which.
When the accident occurred there were 120 men in the mine and the
anxiety did not cease till all had been found. The explosion effects
did not cover a wide territory in the mine, and after the eight
bodies had been found no more casualties were found.
Peter F. Smith, Coroner of Fayette county left Uniontown for the
seat of the disaster and arrived early upon the scene. The
officials of the United Mine Workers sent as their representative at
the mine, Frederick Dilcher, from Pittsburg. Dr. Smith empaneled a
jury consisting of E. L. Moorhouse, John A. Robinson, Henry Leonard,
William L. Lenhart, Fletcher E. Chalfant and W. M. Fisher, who
viewed the bodies Friday evening.
The Coroner’s jury conducted a lengthy and exhaustive inquest over
the remains of the victims of the disaster, and rendered the
following verdict late Wednesday night:
We find that John Bennett, John Cartwright, Harry Hagar, Robert
Davis, William Pritchard, John and Silas Helston and James Bell came
to their death by an explosion of gas in entry 10 of the Umpire mine
of Friday, the 23rd of September, 1898, between the hours of 7 and 9
A. M., and our verdict is that had the proper mine officials, whose
duty it was to remove the danger that was known to exist, fulfilled
their duty, the accident would not have happened.
During the inquest, at which Robert Brownlee, Chief of the Bureau of
Mines was present, it developed that Raymond McCune, aged 13 years,
was engaged to operate the fan, and that he had shut off the air
current when the explosion occurred. Part of the time the fan was
run by Corbin McCune, aged 14 years, the father of the boys starting
it each morning.
John T. Armstrong, formerly fire boss at the Umpire mines, but now
employed at South Fork, Pa., said, “On the morning of March 21st, I
pronounced the mine unsafe, put up ‘danger’ and told the men to stay
out. Pit Boss Underwood said there was no danger in entries 5 and 6
and told the men to go to work.”

Smith of Uniontown and Dr. Davidson of New Salem were summoned. Although the first aid crew were at work with the pulmotor in a few minutes after Davin’s body had received the shock, he could not be revived.
